WATCH ›Marking a Major Jerusalem Milestone at 50
2017 marks the celebration of two 50th anniversaries: the reunification of Jerusalem, and the reunification of Hadassah’s hospitals, including a special celebration marking the symbolic moment when then Hadassah President Charlotte Jacobson received the keys back to Hadassah Mount Scopus.
A CITY UNIFIED. HADASSAH UNIFIED.
Hadassah’s commitment to the health and well-being of Jerusalem, Israel, and all of its people has never wavered. Not in 1939, when Hadassah opened the first teaching hospital and medical center in the Middle East, atop Mount Scopus. And not in 1948, when a convoy was ambushed en route to Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus, killing 75 medical personnel. Hadassah evacuated the hospital, which remained closed until Jerusalem’s reunification in 1967. With the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967, came the reunification of Hadassah Ein Kerem and Mount Scopus. Since then, Hadassah has led Israel’s medical innovation and stayed true to its philosophy of being a bridge for peace.
50th Anniversary Celebration of the Reunification in Jerusalem
On May 25, 2017, a sunny morning atop Jerusalem's Mount Scopus, the mood was jubilant as the crowd came together for the official Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Reunification of Hadassah Hospital Mt. Scopus and Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem.
Personal Stories
These personal stories recollect that day in June, 1967 when Jerusalem was unified and the announcement came that "the Kotel is in our hands", when a young couple on their honeymoon helped to clean up Hadassah Mt. Scopus, and when a Hadassah research professor went back to Mt. Scopus and found his notebooks still intact after 19 years. These stories and others help bring Hadassah's practical Zionism to life and enable us to honor this proud moment in Hadassah's history.
