Although the Pope’s friendships and strong tradition of dialogue with Jewish leaders has forged a deeper understanding and friendship between Jews and Catholics, I am deeply concerned about the Vatican’s unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood. Contrary to its stated aims, this treaty does not further the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. This proclamation grants legitimacy to Palestinian statehood while allowing the Palestinians to circumvent negotiations with Israel on final status matters.
