Research in Service to Humanity: Hadassah’s DNA

Thursday, Sep 1 2016

Prof. Eyal Mishani

How can we stop the lethal recurrence of melanoma? How can we prevent a fatal heart-valve disorder from occurring? How can we know before we administer a lung cancer treatment whether it will be effective? How can we prompt pancreatic cells to produce more insulin? These are just a few of the scientific questions being explored by the Hadassah Medical Center’s physician/researchers.

From the initial laboratory study to the human clinical trial, a wide tapestry of innovative research is a chief hallmark at Hadassah.

As Prof. Eyal Mishani, Director of Hadassah’s Department of Research and Development, explains: “For Hadassah, there is a golden triangle in which education and research go hand in hand with clinical excellence. We believe that cutting-edge medicine is practiced when physicians are actively involved in research.”

With this culture of research so central to Hadassah’s DNA:

  • Hadassah researchers receive over 60 percent of the National Science Foundation awards for biomedical research in Israeli hospitals.
  • This year, Hadassah researchers have been awarded 17 million dollars in grants and donations.
  • Hadassah researchers publish 500 to 700 scientific papers annually.
  • 200 sponsored clinical studies and 300 investigator-initiated studies are conducted each year.
  • Hadassah researchers have hundreds of patents for diagnostic and therapeutic devices.
  • Seven products are on the market and 30 more are in development.
