Raising Breast Cancer Awareness & Funds at Lord + Taylor

Thursday, Oct 31 2019

“It was an amazing experience ... getting the word out about the good work of Hadassah to the community at large and to those that worked at Lord & Taylor.  I believe that working at the grassroots level is invaluable," said Hadassah Greater Washington (HGW) volunteer Ramona Cohen.

From October 4th through 7th, Hadassah Greater Washington raised awareness for breast cancer and funds to support Hadassah's breast cancer education, research and treatment during Lord + Taylor's Charity Days at its White Flint Store in Kensington, Maryland.

Working in pairs for two-hour shifts, volunteers at Hadassah Greater Washington's table welcomed shoppers during Charity Days, sharing Hadassah educational materials on breast cancer, information about our Check it Out™ for Teens programs, tips for self exams and information about lifesaving treatments and research at the Hadassah Medical Organization.

The first shopper HGW volunteers greeted when the store opened on Friday morning was Ann Eden, past President of the Greater Washington Area Big Chapter from 1975 to '78.  Now 100 years old, Ann still enthusiastically supports our local activities!

Our Volunteers were touched and inspired by the courage and optimism of the stories shoppers shared about their own experiences with breast cancer. They were pleased when shoppers stopped by our table to say they were Hadassah members or married to members, they were glad Hadassah was there, sharing such important information.

Lord + Taylor customers were invited to “do something good together," with 100% of proceeds from "Savings Passes" going to Hadassah to fund our life-saving breast cancer projects. Tom Kennedy, general manager of the White Flint Lord + Taylor, reported that L + T had sold 651 Charity Days Saving Passes, raising over $2,700, and mentioned that customers were grateful for Hadassah's efforts.

"I loved the idea of Hadassah being the charity of choice for L & T because it put our name out in the general community," said Judy Garner, a past President of Greater Washington Area Big Chapter (1990-93) who helped establish our Check it Out™ for Teens partnership with Suburban Hospital over 20 years ago.

Elaine Weinstein, a Neshama Chapter volunteer, said she was “proud to have been able to help raise both money and awareness. I’m ready to help when Check It Out® goes back into the High Schools.”

Earlier this fall, to raise funds for our local breast cancer awareness program Check it Out® for Teens, Neshama Chapter of Hadassah Greater Washington presented a Gala Fashion Show at the same Lord + Taylor store. L & T provided lunch, dressed our member-models in the latest fall fashions and gave out fashion tips and door prizes. The show attracted a sell-out crowd.
