Marlyn Bradshaw
What is it about Hadassah that resonates with you?
Being a nurse, and reading about all of the wonderful things that the Hadassah Medical Organization is able to do, for people of all races, faiths and ethnicities. The fact that Hadassah was started by nurses. Knowing that I can meet like-minded nurses, especially Jewish nurses, for the purposes of education and fundraising.
How did you get involved with Hadassah?
I read about a Hadassah Nurses Council Meeting being held in a local supermarket’s community room. At first, I went for socializing, but I was hooked from that first meeting. Within one month, I was elected vice president. That was in 2007. I became a life member in 2013.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I have been a nurse for over 30 years. I am currently a full-time occupational health nurse and a member of the City of Philadelphia Department of Health Board of Directors. I also work part-time for The Philadelphia Eagles! I have one son who is a full-time medical support technician and a part-time EMT and firefighter. I have nine grandchildren. I do lots of volunteer work for the Philadelphia MRC, the Bucks County MRC, the American Red Cross, and the 2nd Police District Advisory Committee. Several of my grands and I participate in JRA (Jewish Relief Agency) every month. I am very lucky as both of my parents are still alive, my siblings live far away and I have a partner who is very caring and thoughtful, most of the time.
As a nurse, what do you find most inspiring about Hadassah’s efforts?
The building of the Sarah Wetsman David Hospital Tower at Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem. The Philadelphia Nurses Council helped raise the money to build rooms that are specifically for the nurses. Hadassah’s doctors, nurses and other medical professionals are at the forefront of the world’s medical research and surgeries. The fact that medical professionals from Israel are first on the scene in national disasters. Hadassah is an amazing organization!
